UDC – Midday mile
07 Mar 2019
We are committed to keeping our team happy & healthy, so we have adopted a new tradition. As we are fortunate enough to be based in Denzell Gardens, they provide the perfect location for our ‘Midday Mile’.
Research has shown that time is the biggest barrier to taking part in sport and physical activity in the workplace, with many of us choosing to work through our lunch break and grabbing a sandwich at our desks. The World Health Organisation has cited that physical inactivity is one of the leading causes of deaths globally, with 1 in 4 adults not physically active enough. Research by our partners the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity and Health revealed that employees who were more physically active took fewer sick days and were less likely to turn up to work feeling poorly.
So, we have started this year as we mean to go on and we are all taking to the beautiful Denzell Gardens for a midday/lunchtime walk to make sure we all walk a mile a day. A 2015 study found many mental benefits for walking for 30 minutes during lunch. Workers had increased enthusiasm, felt more relaxed, and were less nervous after a 30-minute walk at lunchtime. They also improved their physical fitness and other measures of health.
So, whilst we can’t promise a full 30 minutes, we can strive for at least a mile and who knows what the summer may bring in terms of health and fitness?
Let us know if you’ll be taking up the challenge in your work place?
